Great book from the series; while the first one did a great job fleshing out the world, this one gives us more experience with the witches, more character growth, and an interesting kind of mystery to solve with intrigue and betrayals.
I also have noticed more of the effort that Mark Anthony put into the language of the runes, and if you are paying attention, you can decipher what's being said before it's explained.
Character decisions feel more earned here than the first book, and interactions feel more natural and less antagonistic. That said, the usual caveats still apply; this book could have done with a more aggressive editor to cut the word count, and there is an interaction between Beltan and Travis in the woods that feels like it's played up for Drama rather than a natural exchange.
